I can only hope for good things...

I have seen this on a couple different friends' blogs and had fun leaving comments.
1. As a comment on this post, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew/know me a little or a lot, anything you remember!
2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you.

STILL WORKING...

The only reason you're getting another post is because I extended my employment for another week. I have 2 days after today, which means you won't be hearing from me for a while. Unless I call you in a panic for parenting advice! So these are just random pics: I think she looks like Jess in this picture-maybe it's the eyes, I don't know...
It's my personal opinion that most people don't put enough pictures of THEMSELVES on their blogs....enough of the kids! (I know, you can never get enough of them) but I go to check out some of my old friends and....not a single picture! I don't remember what you look like! I have alzheimers, okay?! So, not to be a hypocrite, here are some of Josh and me.
She loves giving "bacci" or kisses. I guess most babies do, until, when? Soon, right?
um, Kai'a crying because she doesn't like being in the car...I just liked her hair at the moment. This one's funny: at the Crewhouse where Josh stays during his weeks of work: I put her in front of a cartoon channel (We haven't had TV since I was pregnant, so she just gets her usual DVDs at home.) and she sat like this for a full hour. never budged. Which was good, because I had a lot of food to make for Josh to eat throughout the week...see? TV is a great thing! hahaha
I labeled this video as "Kai'a's first stairs" but I couldn't actually see if that's what it was...

And now I don't know how to flip it. sorry!

And what should I say to end this monoloque? I guess perhaps a reminder to myself to put pictures of Indi (who just had surgery and gets to wear an Elizabethan collar (cone) for a MONTH) and Josh, in his flight-suit, which is pretty attractive...And, just a "hi" and "thanks" to everyone who's been in touch!

RANDOM THOUGHTS & MISCELLANEOUS

I gave my notice at my job; in less than 2 weeks I will be a bonefied stay-at-home mom. I will also not have my usual access to the internet, so the posts will become fewer and farther between...I will definitely miss that aspect of the job. Not to mention that it's the best job EVER; oh, I will miss the wine-and-dine perks and all that jazz, but I suppose it never hurts to simplify.

Ah, the last of the mango bread! Thank goodness-this picture was supposed to rival Leslie's, but it doesn't. Except that it's MANGO bread :)

Kai'a is using a spoon these days-normally much better than it shows here, but what a cute smile-I just had to add these.

Trying on her daddy's new flight-boots. Ha ha-Josh lives on Maui and has to wear boots!

On the 4th of July we taught her the sign for "fireworks" and she did it all night long! Smartie! And, as you can see below, we have been spending far too much time on the phone, trying to get our situations all straightened out...it was funny to see her do this, but sad, you know? More to come next week!

SCORPIONS & CENTIPEDES

We have made so much progress with our yard; I just had to dedicate a post to it. We pulled up a lot of asphalt...
And a lot of brick...
Oh, and MORE bricks! But look! Can you see it?!.....dirt....aaahhhh....finally!
Another look at the dirt:
See the big boulders in the background? Fake. I don't know why they are there. Really.
We even cleared out the side of the house-you can actually walk there now, and the trees don't grow up onto the roof anymore...I must admit, Josh went a bit wild with the machete...started to scare me a little...
I've been working on the yard a little while Josh is gone...it's hard, though, because Kai'a loves to play in the dirt where I am moving cinder-blocks. I move a block, grab the sledgehammer, and kill the unearthed scorpions before Kai'a has a chance to go for them. She thinks it's a game, and rather funny...I try telling her-"go over there! See your doll? Go get your doll!" but she doesn't fall for it. So, it's a slow process. Yesterday I had 4 scorpions and a centipede under my belt by 7:30am. Not too shabby! And so far, Kai'a hasn't succeeded in beating me to any...
I'm also happy to add that we are (pretty much) OUT OF MANGOS! Hallelujah! I got mango rash myself, on my wrist-thought I was resistant but I guess I've just been lucky. Anyway, I've never had poison ivy, but it must be similar. It's driving me CRAZY!
Now, aren't you all glad you don't have our yard? :)

SINGLE MOM: WEEK 2

You know, I was going to post my even-worse-than-last-week's-first-day-without-Josh story from this morning, but I just can't. I don't want to relive the details. Let's just say that it culminated with having security called on me at 5:00am in the Walmart parking lot, regarding concerns that a child was being abused. Yeah. That bad. And Josh...it was NOT funny, so stop laughing. And no, Walmart is not open at 5:00 in the morning. Thank goodness for the hope of better tomorrows!

FATHER'S DAY?

View from the Plantation Restaurant at sunset-over the island of Molokai Me eating a delicious, goat-cheese salad Josh's "fancy" dessert of ho-ho's or whatever they are...
I made Josh put on a shirt so I could get an actual "Father's Day" photo and this was the best we could do...she was VERY squirmy!
A lot of people have beautiful tributes to their dads/husbands for Father's Day, so I thought I would add mine...sort of.
See, I planned Father's Day for a good month: arranged dinner for the 2 of us at the Plantation Restaurant (had them present a "special" dessert-his favorite: Little Debbie Swiss Rolls) Had my gifts ordered and there on time, etc. It was Wed night, the last night we both had off together before he left for Oahu. I said, "Happy Father's day, even though it's tomorrow". To which he replied "Father's day is on Sunday." "No, it's Thursday-I've been planning this for a month, I KNOW it's tomorrow." Well, who knew Father's Day is ALWAYS on a Sunday? That's my brain for you-can't remember our anniversary or my own birthday, so why should I get Father's Day right? It was pretty funny because I was dead serious about it. Why can't holidays be consistent? Some are DATES and some are DAYS-it's messed up; not my fault.
And here is our first blog video-since I couldn't capture a decent picture on the (real) Father's Day, I thought I'd just get a clip of her being her normal self. Nothing funny or amazing, but I know a lot of the family hasn't seen her since she was 2 months old, or 6 months old, so I hope it is sufficient.

WEEK 1: SINGLE MOM

Josh was off-island this week training for his new job as a flight nurse. I am excited for him to have a new adventure...he seems to have enjoyed the inundation of new info and the people he was with. I know it must be scary; it's something of a career change, really. And there's the thought of him flying multiple times in a day (the year we moved here, 2 planes went down) so that's always hanging in the back of my head; but I suppose you get used to it. Heather Shirley, I could use your perspective on this one! For me, even though I'm still working full-time, this past week was a taste of "being on my own" with Kai'a. Of course it couldn't be just a normal week, much less a good one. It had to be full of little disasters! Now, I'm NOT going to make this sound dismal; I actually dealt with the days fairly well-in fact, I couldn't do anything but laugh after the first day:
  • dropped Josh off @ airport
  • came home for snack-she gagged on a piece of fruit-threw up her breakfast
  • showered her off
  • put her down for nap; wouldn't take nap
  • went in to get her-had taken off diaper (1st time) and had gone to bathroom in crib
  • showered her off
  • went outside to work in yard, pick mangos
  • fell and split her lip (1st time)
  • fixed her up and went back outside
  • she grabbed a mango while I wasn't looking and started to have allergic reaction
  • showered her off
  • she ran into corner of wall in bathroom-bruise down length of her face
  • had lunch-went to put her down for nap
  • oops-oh, yeah-crib sheets
  • changed bedding; put her down, she slept 45 minutes (aka NOT long enough)

That was my first MORNING as a single mom...the rest of the day was more mellow. But then there was still the dead car-battery at 10pm with exhausted baby in tow, the gallon of milk that flooded the fridge and, consequently, the floor (which I had FINALLY swept/mopped just that morning!) three nights of her waking in the middle of the night in pain (cutting molars) and rocking her until her tylenol kicked back in, and of course, the never-ending mangos and household chores and getting her to daycare by 7 in the morning, and BOY how do you moms do it out there? I am fairly exhausted, and it's probably nothing compared to what happens to most people on a daily basis!

The great thing is that we bonded, and I learned that there's really no point in getting frustrated about things when there is nothing else you can do about them! I let her feed herself, and make a mess every time. Let her try a lot of new things (some of which hurt) like learning to get up and down from the couch by herself, or off of our bed without help (we have a concrete floor)... playing with Indi by herself, even though he knocks her over and kisses her (allergic reaction, shower-every time). I am actually proud of myself and her for surviving this week. I know it sounds lame, because some of you go months at a time on your own, but it was big for me.

She was so excited to see Josh at the airport-she recognized him quite a ways off, and just ran. Very cute. I'm sure they're having a lot of fun today. I'm not sure what pictures I'll add to this. I know one is of her being the dirtiest to-date (not counting food or sand) though it's hard to tell in the photo. And the one of her with "old man tufts of hair over the ears". It was a busy week, but I didn't whip out the camera as much as I should have!
